5. Saint Peter’s Square (Vatican)
Clearly if you want to admire the square you cannot go on a day of religious celebration, because up to 300,000 parishioners can gather there to listen to the Pope. Leaving that aside, just seeing her looks so peaceful, with St. Peter’s Basilica there, that makes you want to take a book and sit on one of its steps to spend the afternoon.
But with or without liturgy the ranks of tourists are asking for it. Everyone wants to admire its 284 columns and 88 pilasters that line the square, as well as the 140 statues of saints made in 1670 by Bernini’s disciples, and of course, those who want to enter the basilica.
